Pre-ignition and detonation are responsible for a significant number of engine failures in General Aviation aircraft each year. Pre-ignition occurs when the air-fuel charge ignites while the piston is still compressing the mixture. Detonation is a violent explosion process after the compression stroke near or just after top dead center. This seminar will acquaint pilots with the hazards of pre-ignition and detonation events.
An over-reliance on automation may be a precursor to a flying mishap, regardless if the flight is in daylight hours or during night flight conditions. General aviation pilots are well-advised to understand the limitations of automation and to maintain proficiency in flight operations with and without automation.
Our September meeting will include a FAAST Seminar starting at 7pm (registration encouraged). This will be held at the EAA Chapter 104 club room at KVPZ. Arrivals begin at 6:30pm and the seminar will start at 7pm. Regular chapter meeting to follow.
In the seminar, “Preflight After Maintenance,” we will discuss the importance of thorough preflight inspections of aircraft that have just been returned to service. The discussion will include the consequences of inadequate preflight inspections, some common problems that have led to accidents, and what to look for following maintenance.

Use of Weather Information and Preflight After Maintenance
From Dennis Miller with the Chicago Area FAASTeam…
In the first seminar, Use of Weather Information, we will take a look at available weather information sources for general aviation pilots and offer guidance on making well-informed weather decisions.
In the second seminar, Preflight After Maintenance, we will discuss the importance of thorough preflight inspections of aircraft that have just been returned to service. The discussion will include the consequences of inadequate preflight inspections, some common problems that have led to accidents, and what to look for following maintenance.
Saturday Saturday June 15th @ 10AM! Stop by for some coffee, donuts and approaches! This seminar is presented by the Greater Chicago FAASTeam and is hosted by EAA Chapter 104. Register online.
Stabilized Approach – from www.faasafety.gov
Unstable approaches and the reluctance of many pilots to go-around when an approach becomes unstable are precursors to many general aviation accidents. Emphasizing stable approaches and making the decision to go-around are key to reducing landing accidents.
